Oceanista reveals how the style and culture of sailors has been borrowed in high fashion over the decades. The exhibition showcases ocean-inspired fashion designed by internationally renowned fashion houses and Finnish designers.

The designers include Chanel, Versace, Thom Browne, Jean Paul Gaultier, Iris van Herpen, Maison Margiela, Moncler, Pierre & Gilles, Eilish Macintosh, Philip Treacy, Sumiko Iwakiri, Idaliina Friman and Anne-Mari Pahkala.

The extensive exhibition, which features a total of 110 garments and accessories, also includes ocean-inspired and highly nostalgic classics and street wear, dating all the way back to the end of the 19th century.

The exhibition is being produced by the National Museum of Finland in cooperation with Expona, based on an exhibition at the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark.

Inspired to knit?

One of the garments in the exhibition is a knitted sweater – Caught in the Knit – by designer Laura Dalgaard. The knitwear designed in 2020 features many things one could find in a fishing net, such as fish, buoys, rubbish from the sea and even a lone lobster. The different knitting techniques used in the garment bring to mind the reflections of water and patterns of ropes.

Laura Dalgaard’s knitting pattern is available from this page for the duration of the exhibition, and it can be made from various scrap yarns. The pattern is available in English and Danish.
